Refractive Surgery/ LASIK

What is Refractive Surgery or LASIK?

Among all laser eye surgery treatments used to treat nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism, the most popular is LASIK. It stands for “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis”.

The surgery is painless and relatively quick. Best of all, results are noted within just one day and can mean that you will not need to use eyeglasses or contact lenses again.

LASIK treatment

As well as LASIK, there are various other correction surgeries. PRK, LASEK and phakic IOL are all options if LASIK is not a good surgery for you.

For LASIK surgery in particular, numbing eye drops are applied to your eye and your eye is positioned under a laser. A lid speculum is used to keep your eyelids from closing. A suction ring is placed on the front of your eye to stop it moving before a corneal flap is created. Your surgeon will then use a computer to adjust the laser for your specific prescription.

The laser will then send pulses of light to your cornea, which painlessly reshapes it. This procedure is performed on both eyes, and can take as little as 5 minutes per eye.

LASIK Surgery benefits

After the surgery you should expect some blurry vision, but your doctor can advise you on the best way to deal with this and will recommend you rest for a while. Normal eyesight should return within a few days for most people, if not much sooner.

Laser eye surgery has many benefits and helps most patients achieve 20/20 vision. This can drastically improve your quality of life as it can mean not having to use contact lenses or eyeglasses, or at the very least only having to use a much lower prescription level.
